The Declaration of Independence is the document that declared the United States of America freedom from the British Empire as the Thirteen Colonies. It is the second most copied written work in history, second only to the Bible. It was adopted by the Second Continental Congress at the Pennsylvania State House (later renamed Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1776. The Declaration justifies the independent statehood of the 13 colonies a s a united nation by listing 27 grievances against King George III. It enlists basic human rights that the king did not apply to the colonies while they were under British rule.
