Philip the Honest (German: Philipp der Aufrichtige) (14 July 1448 - 28 February 1508) was the Elector Palatine from 1476 until 1508.

Life[]

Philip was born in Heidelberg in 1448 as the only son of Louis IV, Elector Palatine. His father died in 1449 and Philip was adopted by his uncle Frederick I who took over the Palatinate and the electoral dignity. In 1474 he married Margaret of Bavaria-Landshut and was given the Upper Palatinate as his own territory. In 1476 Frederick died and, since Frederick's son Louis was born from a morganatic marriage, Philip succeeded him. In 1499 he inherited the territories of Palatinate-Mosbach. He fought in the Landshut War of Succession from 1503 until 1505 against Duke Albert IV of Bavaria-Munich. Although he lost, the territories around Neuburg were granted to the sons of his son Rupert.

Philip died in 1508 in Germersheim and was buried in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Heidelberg.
