The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), officially the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta also known as the Order of Malta or Knights of Malta was a Military order that originated from the medieval crusading order of the Knights Hospitaller. The Order still exists today and is a Observer to the United Nations even though it lacks any real territory.
