The Swedish-Novgorodian Wars was a series of wars between Sweden and the Novgorod Republic over control of the Gulf of Finland and lands held by various Finnic people groups who inhabit the areas of modern day Finland and Karelia. The war would later become one of religion between the two powers trying to convert the locals of the area to either Catholicism or the Russian Orthodox Church this would escalate in the 12th century after papal involvement in crusades against Orthodox lands. The Conflict would be part of the larger Russo-Swedish wars which would last until the beginning of the 19th century.
